On Horn Peak above The Thacher School, members of the Upper Ojai Search and Rescue team found a notebook left there by two hikers seeking the peak in 2013.

Notebook found about epic trek to Horn Peak

A trail register left atop 3,332-foot Horn Peak more than seven years ago was found Feb. 6 by two Upper Ojai Search and Rescue team members who regularly hike in the area to stay in shape, improve area familiarization and stay aware of current trail conditions.

A canister containing the register was placed on the peak on Oct. 27, 2013, by Ojai Valley News senior reporter Perry Van Houten and hiking companion Bardley Smith. With the old trail long-abandoned, the pair used GPS data and satellite images to find the peak. Van Houten’s “Ojai Valley Hiking Trails” column, reprinted here from Nov. 20, 2013, describes the adventure.
